Experiential Workshops

Russell Marz, ND, LAc -  Food Sustainability, Longevity and the Ideal Diet

This talk is designed to address the issue of how our food choices affect the environment. A case is made for the ideal diet based on how the foods that we grow and eat can actually benefit the health of the planet. Currently global warming, deforestation, habitat destruction, water depletion, ocean dead zones and rising water and CO2 gases, are causing the greatest mass extinction on the planet since the last one the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, which occurred approximately 66 million years ago. There have been 5 mass extinctions, in the last 500 million years, in which over 50% of the species on the planet became extinct. At our current rate, we are now well into our sixth mass extinction. Much has been said about sustainability and our food supply. Certainly no one can deny the impact that humans have had on the health of our planetary environment. This talk focuses on how our current eating practices have been one of the leading causes of  rising CO2 gases, in fact being the highest ever recorded during a mass extinction event. A detailed discussion of how over-fishing and the raising of animals for food consumption, all over the world, has led to water shortages, ocean dead zones, deforestation, habitat destruction, loss of biodiversity, and the possibly demise of human civilization as we know it. It is currently estimated that over 50% of greenhouse gases have been linked to animal agriculture and that if we do not stop the global demand for meat and fish consumption, we may see fishless oceans and complete destruction of all rainforests in 30 years.

The second half of this lecture is designed to show how Blue Zones can be a guide to what the healthiest diet in the world is for human health and longevity. Currently we only consume less than half of all edible plant foods on the earth. What are the top 20 healthiest foods to prevent the major causes of death, which include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease? A discussion of how we might consume foods, that are not commonly eaten, that could offer immense benefits to both human and environmental health will be mentioned. Also the concept of calorie restriction, periodic and intermittent fasting will be shown how these techniques can have a dramatic effect of health and longevity.
A thoughtful discussion of how we can incorporate all of these principles into our daily lives so that we may slow down and even stop the ongoing mass extinction that is currently taking place. The final summary of this lecture will address about how we can cajole our patients, friends and family to adopt to this new paradigm in eating, what I like to refer as an “incunabula” (The very beginning of something).

Sharum Sharif, ND - The Use of Homeopathy in Epidemics and Pandemics

According to WHO and CDC, infectious disease outbreaks are on the rise. In the absence of highly effective treatments for the management of epidemics and/or pandemics, as alternative health care providers, we have the social responsibility of offering the world an innovative epidemic and/or pandemic response plan. Homeopathy has had an extremely impressive documented historical record of effectiveness in treating life-threatening diseases. During this presentation, Dr. Sharif will discuss the homeopathic prophylaxis and treatment of many potentially deadly epidemics including, most importantly, the feared pandemic influenza. He will also propose a pandemic response plan and will gather live feedback from the audience on how to best handle such crises.

Jeana Kimball, ND, MPH - Relationship to Self, Patients and Practice: Use Your Resources

Naturopathic physicians individual treatment plans for their patients. Cultivating a working relationship with your patients in order to do this individualization is paramount to success. This workshop acknowledges and focuses on the simple, yet profound aspects of each of our practices - relationship to self, patients and practice. We will focus on patterns, stumbling blocks and accessing resources to optimize these relationships.

Adeola Mead, ND - Seeing, Hearing and Knowing - How to Facilitate Deep Healing

Our patients come to us seeking healing in some way or another. Part of the healing process, the medicine, is the therapeutic relationship formed between doctor and patient. In this session, we will discuss how growing in deeper union with the Higher Power, pursuing self knowledge, and developing deep listening skills can fortify the therapeutic nature of our interactions with patients and improve the efficacy of treatment plans.

Sussanna Czeranko, ND - The Contributions of Vincent Priessnitz, Sebastian Kneipp, Louis Kuhne and Adolf Just

We will study the methods and theories developed by the giants of Nature Cure and we will explore the lives of Priessnitz, Kneipp, Kuhne and Just and what pearls guided their clinical practice. The body of literature left behind by these early leaders of Nature Cure provides us with valuable tools and knowledge for those who grapple with patient care today.
Do We Fear or Trust the Fever?
Nothing is more quintessentially naturopathic care than the management of the common fever. The very core of the naturopathic healing paradigm is grasping the significance of the fever. To understand fever’s gift is to understand that we do not interfere by suppressive treatments. This view has never been compatible with biomedicine.
The consensus among the early Naturopaths constituted a unified stance that the fever was the expression of self-healing, that it was positive, and that it was a natural process to return to homeostasis. For the early Naturopaths, the fever was in itself not a disease, but rather an effort to rid the organism of a disease, and to restore a normal condition.
Seeing that the fever itself was not a disease did not imply, though, that the Naturopaths chose to do nothing. Supporting the patient’s vitality and addressing the cause of fever were essential. We will explore treatment protocols and naturopathic tools for acute diseases and examine the consequences of fever suppression.

Erin Westaway, ND - The Role of Story in Medicine

Story is one of the most fundamental ways that humans process and relate to each other, the world and their own lives.  We'll explore together through discussion, examples, and storytelling the varied roles of story in the healing professions.  We'll look at story in terms of how it informs our work and our patient's perspective as well as story as medicine in and of itself.

Jared Zeff, ND, LAc and Bruce Milliman, ND - Low Force Interventions

Drs. Jared Zeff and Bruce Milliman  are long time primary care providers with a relationship of deep respect and collegiality spanning decades. While their practice approaches in some ways are different, they share a passion for and expertise in using “the least force” with their patients. With collectively over 80 years of clinical experience, and through demonstrating deep collegiality, curiosity, confidence based on experience, Drs. Milliman and Zeff will each present their perspectives on this topic: what they mean by “least force”  the power of least force medicines and interventions, HOW to clinically navigate , evaluate, manage and remain confident in our powerful, vitalistic, lower force interventions; and when and WHY to scale up in challenging clinical situations both acute and chronic. Using an array of clinical examples, and sharing their wealth of knowledge with each other and with you, sit with these amazing physicians as they share, explore with each other and guide you. They will role model how why and under what circumstances, to embrace the least force with confidence, and to establish a framework for as Dr. Milliman says: "know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, and know when to walk away and know when  to run (engage with other clinicians, and how to do operationalize that engagement) ”.
